A majority of us may spend a fortune on hair treatments, and products; however, is this what your hair really needs? Spare a thought. Come to think of it, these off-the-shelf products, in the actual, are nothing short of an expensive buy. They not only rip your hair of essential oils, but also rip your pockets in the bargain. Shampoos displayed at the mega-store aisles do little to improve, or preserve the 'quality and quantity' of your hair. In the name of squeaky clean hair, all you get is hair that feels bone dry, and brittle. Washing your hair regularly -- though it does work for some -- is a solution that falls flat for many. Rinsing your hair with a nature-based shampoo thrice a week may serve the purpose of locking moisture, and strengthening the hair. Using natural ingredients, and essential oils is a far better proposition than a designer packaged hair care product professing blatant affectations.

Here are a few homemade shampoo recipes that you may choose to formulate, and rinse your hair with.

Recipe 1
  • Chamomile tea - 4 bags (a handful of fresh chamomile flowers would also do)
  • Pure soap flakes - 4 tablespoons
  • Glycerin - 1½ tablespoon
  • Allow the tea bags to soak in boiled water for about 10 minutes.
  • The next step is to remove the tea bags and add remaining liquid along with the soap flakes and allow the soap to soften.
  • After the soap softens, add some glycerin to the mixture, and stir till the mixture blends well.
  • Pour this mixture in a bottle and place it in a cool and dark place.
Recipe 2

  • Jojoba/Grape seed or other light vegetable oil - ½ teaspoon

Know what Goes into Your Shampoo
Before you read through the recipes, acquainting you to the principle ingredients that need to be added in shampoos is a must. Note that not all shampoo recipes mentioned in the upcoming section consist of each and every ingredient listed here. Few are combined, while some are left out. This is probably due to the fact that while a set of ingredients may be beneficial, they may not prove compatible. Hence, unification of all ingredients may not serve the purpose; whereas, an amalgamation of a few suits well.

  • Chamomile tea helps to soothe an irritated, itchy scalp; thereby, combating dandruff. When mixed with henna, it is known to lighten the color of your hair.
  • Besides helping one to sprout artificial tears, Glycerin has so much more to it. It acts porous toward locking moisture in the hair; thus, preventing the highly dreaded frizz.
  • Castile soap bar consists extracts of soybean oil, coconut oil, and olive oil. An ingredient considered must to prepare homemade shampoos, it provides the much-required base, and consistency to the concoction.
  • Jojoba oil is known to nourish the hair from root to tip, fights dandruff, and curbs thinning of hair. Your hair will never feel greasy, or weighed down with regular use of jojoba oil.
  • Problems concerning dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, dry, and frizzy hair could be managed with the application of Grape seed oil. It is also known to nourish the hair follicles, and strengthen the hair shaft.
  • Avocado oil when massaged directly onto the hair does so much better than any other pocket-peeling product picked from the store shelf. However, when avocado oil is added to making a shampoo at home, it softens the hair, nourishes the roots, and penetrates deep into the hair follicles; thereby, stimulating hair growth.
  • Aloe vera works toward resuscitating the hair from root to tip, strengthening the hair shafts, preventing breakage, and resultant split-ends. It also works on promoting hair growth in areas of the scalp that endure bald patches. Regular use of aloe vera oil, applied directly, or as an addition to an home-based shampoo, helps control hair fall, and thinning.
  • Be it for the purpose of sharpening the mind, or munching on a healthy snack to stay slim and fit, almonds have perpetually ruled the diet chart. Almond oil fights hair loss, dry and scaly scalp, repairs rough, and damaged ends of the hair by providing it with moisture, helping you to achieve a well-groomed look.
  • Rosemary has a delightful fragrance, and is known to accelerate hair growth, making hair stronger, and healthier.
  • Lemongrass is known to fight hair fall, and promote hair growth in areas of the scalp with bald patches. For hair that lacks shine, and luster, lemongrass proves to be the best remedy.
  • A little Vanilla extract can be added to your home-based shampoo for your hair to smell, and feel fresh.
Homemade shampoos are easy to make, and the least time-consuming; not to forget, the amount of good they do to the hair. With ingredients that add all the goodness to your shampoo -- with a positive mindset, of course -- is sure to reap benefits. So go buy yourself the aforementioned ingredients to concoct a shampoo that lets your hair go in sync, and not in splits!
